World Meteorological Day at Vižmarje Brod Primary School.

We organised a »STEM day« to mark World Meteorological Day, with three classes of 6 graders, with the topic being »Weather«.

The students closely inspected the school weather station and produced weather forecast and weather report.

As students had already learnt a lot about the weather on previous STEM days, the teacher tried a new approach this time and »moved« the students to Mars to inspect the weather there. They tried and followed the NASA example. NASA sent Curiosity Rover to Mars. Therefore the students created a similar vehicle by means of Lego Mindstorms. The user is supposed to programme this vehicle to drive onto the balcony every single morning in order to send the mobile application the data about the weather conditions. This data will include not only the temperature, but also additional information, such as air pollution, UV radiation, moisture, etc.

Both Rover on Mars and Lego vehicle are computer controlled and equipped with many sensors (thermometer, IR sensor, camera, etc).

The students also checked the weather conditions on Mars and compared them to the conditions on Earth. They discussed the life on Mars, atmosphere, clothes, weather, ice, snow, as on Mars the temperature never rises above 0°C.
